"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." ~ Jeremiah 29:11

changes are coming

Last summer our family watched reruns of the TV series "Star Trek: The Next Generation." During the beginning credits, you hear the voice of Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the Starship Enterprise say: "Space... The final frontier... These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: To explore strange new worlds... To seek out new life; new civilizations… To boldly go where no one has gone before!"

When it's finished, my husband always says, "Boldlygo?!? I've watched all the episodes and they've never gone to no Boldlygo!" Makes me laugh every time!

But as I sit here on this cool, snowy morning, hearing that reminds me of ringing in the New Year. As one year comes to a close, and we pack away all of the decorations we pulled out to celebrate the birth of our Savior, we look toward a new beginning. A year which has never before been explored by anyone. It is like looking into the vast and far reaching darkness of space. We have no idea what will be beyond the next minute, the next day, or the next month. It's scary and exciting all at the same time.

But with this New Year, comes ABUNDANT OPPORTUNITY! The opportunity to shake off those things we may not be as proud of, and start fresh. The opportunity to try something new, and fail. The opportunity to try another thing new, and succeed!

This year, our opportunities will be abundant! But what opportunities will we choose? This is where we stand. What do we do now?

January marks 56 years as Faith United Church of Christ, and we have talked many times about being at a crossroads. But we are done talking. The year 2020 is Faith's year of ACTION! There is much to do – creating a new vision and mission statement; revitalizing our social media; working toward financing a new roof (or more!); preparing and living out Rest and Renewal time; and who knows what else. We will make a plan, maybe tweak it once or ten times, but we will always be moving forward. Make no mistake - the Holy Spirit is alive and well within us and within our church, and is just waiting for us to say YES to our call.

With action, takes commitment – the commitment to try, to participate, to be willing to do what others won't do. (By others, I mean others outside of our church!) Jesus taught his disciples actions, not just words. They were taught to heal, to baptize, to work toward peace and justice, to love. And then they were taught to go into the world and do likewise.

Friends, 2020 is our time to go out and do likewise. We are looking into our future, and it is bright! We are going where others won't. Are you ready for the adventure? Buckle up, and maybe, finally, we will find our "Boldlygo!"

Deep Peace and Joy to you and yours this Holiday Season!!

Always Peace, Pastor Heidi
